Most people with a moderate budget ($500 or more) for a laptop should aim for at least 8GB RAM. We generally recommend this amount of memory for most people doing office work and other basic tasks
So most programs will basically use as much as they can to improve performance, if there is memory available. Like I have 32gb, and my baseline desktop usage is 12.5gb. But if I were to drop to 8gb, everything would use less memory because it doesn't see a giant pile of free memory.
If you don't plan to buy more memory, use the 2 x 8GB sticks, if your motherboard supports dual channel; If you plan to buy more memory, stick with a 16 GB stick and buy another 16 GB one. NOTE: To activate the feature you need memories with identical frequencies, size and timings, preferably even from the same brand (this way you avoid many
2 8gb. Run them in dual channel. Make sure to check your motherboard manual on which slots to populate first. 2 8gb. Goggle how to put them into dual channel. Try and get the fastest you can, RGB may look cool (to some people), but won't be faster. And how dare you say RGB won't make your pc faster.
Ram can say its 2666 compatible but not be XMP. The system can use XMP ram with a processor that supports XMP and the Bios Supporting XMP. This is not supported on All processors All Models All Speeds. Putting Faster Ram in a system that does not support overclocking will NOT make the ram or system run faster. You are falling victim to the Mhz

But, for a desktop pc, a single 16gb stick would be acceptable. I would rather not deal with possible mismatched ram issues.
With DDR4, 4x8GB sticks will perform the same - in the real world - as 2x16gb sticks. The only difference, if there is one, will only be present on paper and some benchmarks but won't actually translate to a noticeable difference. Most people won't even noticed the difference between running 2666 vs 3000 or even 3200. Especially in gaming.
